The Voice

"Kalan has a great voice. It's powerful, but also kind of smoky and
seductive. He's a really good live performer and also kicks ass on
violin, which he's played since he was a young kid."
~ Parthenon Huxley, singer/guitarist/songwriter ~

Talk to Kalan Porter fans across Canada and you will find a common theme -- Kalan Porter has an amazing voice. It is his voice that first draws you in. There is a unique quality to his sound that reaches out and grabs you with his ability to evoke emotion and express a maturity beyond his years.  As one fan stated, "I remember the first time I heard Kalan sing. I heard this voice coming from the television in the next room. I had to stop what I was doing to find out who it was. I have been a fan ever since!"

The Musician

Don't be fooled, Kalan Porter's talent goes well beyond his natural vocal ability which has been honed by years of training. He is also an accomplished musician having studied violin and viola at the Royal Conservatory of Music and can play guitar, bass and piano as well. He is not just another one dimensional artist!

"Not only does he look like a young Eddie Jobson,
he plays schizoid violin and viola like Jobson did in his Roxy Music prime.
He also sings like the second coming of Robert Palmer when
Palmer was at his absolute prowlin and growlin best."
~ Jeffrey Morgan, Detroit Metro Times ~

Ask a fanbase that is as diverse as his musical abilities what their favourite Kalan Porter song is and you will receive a wide variety of responses.  It could be his electric violin interpretation of the Fritz Kreisler classical piece "Praeludium and Allegro", or a ballad like his record-breaking first single "Awake in a Dream" (which must be heard live to be truly appreciated) or "In Spite of It All" which showcases both his vocal and violin skills -- all of which can be heard on his Juno nominated, double-platinum debut CD -- or it could be one of the ever-popular covers from his live show which include "Born to Be Wild" and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".  Some might say, "Kalan Porter is a rocker with a fiddle and a classical soul!"

"now I gotta tell you...this 19 year old kid is awesome!!
One of the most unique voices I have ever heard.
That's why I am so into him...he does not sound like anyone else out there.
We are workin' on some cool stuff ... this kid is different!!!"
~ Stevie Salas, renowned guitarist ~

However you put it ... the many layers of Kalan Porter have combined to create a sound that is all his own and a fanbase that is willing to follow him across the country because they just can't seem to get enough of him! In fact, this fanbase has already succeeded in voting him the 2005 Much Music Video Award for People's Choice: Favourite Canadian Artist ... an accomplishment in itself as, at the time, he had only been on the Canadian music scene for a mere seven months and was up against the likes of the ever-popular Avril Lavigne.

The Person

Although currently residing in Toronto, Ontario to pursue his musical career, Kalan was born on November 11, 1985 and raised on a sixth generation cattle/buffalo ranch just outside of Medicine Hat, Alberta. It was there he learned the importance of nature, hard work and, most especially, family. In a letter to his fans after a visit to the family ranch, Kalan stated "I think this time I finally noticed something about the ranch and my family that I took for granted while growing up. There is something in those hills, something in the quiet starry black nights, in seeing the buffalo grazing in the sunset. Something about the pride in my grandparents eyes as they stood at the gate, waving goodbye, as we all return to our busy lives. I was overwhelmed by the beauty and the simplicity of the life I was raised in."

"I could not be the singer I am today without my mom
dragging me to music lessons and making me practice.
She always said I would thank her one day and she was right!"
~ Kalan Porter ~

It is apparent that his deep-rooted family values, strong work ethic and passion for music together with a large dose of humility have combined to make Kalan a person his fans have come to love and his fellow musicians to respect.

"Kalan is one of the nicest and most talented young musicians
I've had the pleasure to work with.
He is talented beyond his years. I had a great time working
with him and can't wait to do it again."
~ Randy Bachman ~
